You do not need a perfect packing list to ask.

For machinery, business stock or a personal purchase, start with a product link or photos and your postcode. Add supplier city and estimated size and weight if known. A useful first reply says whether it can ship, what is missing and the first DDP estimate. The final price follows warehouse measurement of the real packing.

A good answer is specific. A red flag stays vague.

Will you record every package separately—and check whether it can be stacked?	Yes. Each package gets its own count, packed dimensions, actual gross weight, visible-condition record and handling or stacking note.	Only one total weight or volume is recorded, with no package-level data or stacking check.
When is the final DDP price confirmed—and when must I pay?	After checking actual packages—not just product weight—including the longest and heaviest piece, stackability, road access and unloading. The approved price is final for unchanged cargo and delivery arrangements. Ask when payment is due and what happens if you decline: nothing dispatches without approval; return or transfer options and charges must be explained. Cargo Clearly takes no deposit; full shipping payment is due when ready to dispatch, after final-price approval.	You are asked to pay before the quote explains what it covers, what remains open and your choices if you decline. A deposit alone does not prove a quote is incomplete.
How will every product be declared and included in the price?	Door-to-door is not automatically DDP. The quote must name import clearance, duties and VAT handling, and the delivery point. Declarations use each product’s actual name, material, use, quantity and value.	“Door-to-door” leaves taxes unexplained, or every product is called “furniture” or “machine” with one lump value.
Can the final truck actually reach my home or business?	The forwarder checks the full postcode, road and parking access, the longest and heaviest package, and the written handover point.	“Door to door” is promised from a postcode alone, without checking the site or the cargo.
Who unloads—and will the planned equipment handle the largest package?	The quote names who unloads and confirms whether a tail lift, forklift, crane or another plan fits the heaviest and longest piece.	A residential address is treated as proof that the driver can unload every crate.
How will you update me when a truck has no public tracking page?	One contact proactively sends the relevant handovers, current status and next step, including stages that are not visible on a courier website.	You receive a carrier name, but no person owns the missing milestones or explains exceptions.
Which goods or product features must be disclosed before acceptance?	The forwarder checks the true goods and refuses cargo that is dangerous, prohibited, sensitive or undeclared before movement.	“We ship everything,” or advice to hide batteries, liquids, powders or the real product details.

How do I compare a seller’s DDP quote with an independent forwarder’s quote?

Compare the same packed goods, address and unloading plan. Check transport, import clearance, duties and VAT handling, delivery point and exclusions. Ask when the price is final, when payment is due, and what happens if you decline—not just the first number.

Can a private buyer use DDP freight forwarding?

Yes, for accepted shipments. Confirm who handles customs and tax, which documents you provide and whether you need VAT, EORI or a customs broker. Business imports and UK requirements are checked separately; private-buyer arrangements do not automatically apply.
